Fuel prices in Europe: what you should know

Why fuel costs different amounts in each country

The wholesale price of petrol and diesel is similar across Europe – it follows the same international markets. The big differences at the pump come mainly from taxes: the EU sets only minimum excise duties and each country chooses its own level on top, and VAT on fuel ranges from 19% in Germany to 25% in Croatia among the countries GasBu covers. Taxes usually make up around half of the price or more; the rest depends on competition, logistics and station margins.

Islands and special territories show this most clearly: the Canary Islands have their own lower fuel taxation, which is why they are regularly the cheapest region on the map.

Free and regulated markets

In most countries, each station sets its own price. Croatia and Slovenia, however, cap the prices of the main fuels by government decision and currently revise them every week, and the Czech Republic temporarily capped prices in 2026. Austria and, since April 2026, Germany allow stations to raise prices only once a day, at noon, while cuts are allowed at any time. In Portugal, prices usually change on Mondays.

Tips for driving abroad

Before crossing a border, compare prices on both sides – the difference can be tens of cents per litre, and the border section of GasBu shows the cheapest stations near each crossing. Motorway service stations are the most expensive option in every country. The fuel labels E5, E10 and B7 on pumps and filler caps are harmonised across the EU, so you can refuel abroad with confidence. Prices in Czechia, Romania and the United Kingdom are in koruna, lei and pounds; the Europe map converts them to euros at an indicative rate.
