Fuel prices in Czechia: what you should know

Regulated prices and differences between stations

Fuel prices in the Czech Republic are normally set freely by each station. In 2026, however, the government turned to regulation because of the sharp rise in prices: from April to July, and again from 1 October 2026 (initially for one month), the Ministry of Finance sets maximum prices for petrol and diesel every working day for the following day, calculated from wholesale prices plus a capped retail margin. Stations may sell below the cap but not above it, so price differences between regions and networks are smaller than when prices are free – yet it still pays to compare, because some stations sell below the maximum price.

When prices are free, the biggest differences are between types of stations rather than regions: the large networks (ORLEN Benzina, Shell, MOL, OMV, the state-owned EuroOil) are usually more expensive than hypermarket stations and independent low-cost chains, and Prague and motorway stations, especially on the D1, tend to be the most expensive.

Prices are in Czech koruna, so the pump price is also affected by the exchange rate – when the koruna strengthens against the dollar, fuel tends to get cheaper even if oil prices stay the same.

What makes up the price

The price consists of the wholesale price, which follows international quotes, the excise duty – a fixed amount per litre – and 21% VAT, which is also charged on the excise. Taxes therefore make up a large part of the price and changes in oil prices show up at the pump in smaller steps. For October 2026 the government also temporarily lowered the excise duty on diesel.

Where to fill up for less

Hypermarket stations and independent low-cost chains are regularly among the cheapest. On motorways it usually pays to leave at the nearest exit and fill up in the nearest town. When travelling abroad it is worth comparing prices with neighbouring countries – the border section of GasBu shows the cheapest stations on both sides of the crossing.

What today's data shows

The largest network, Orlen with 423 stations, sells diesel CZK 0.70 above the median.
