± vs the country median
Fuel prices in Portugal are not regulated: each station sets its own. In practice, prices move in a weekly rhythm – most stations adjust them on Monday based on how international oil and product quotes developed the previous week, and the expected change is usually known at the end of the week before. Every station must report its prices to DGEG (Direção-Geral de Energia e Geologia), which is where the prices shown by GasBu come from.
The Madeira and Azores archipelagos work differently: their regional governments set maximum prices, so prices there are largely uniform.
A large part of the price is taxes: the tax on petroleum and energy products (ISP), which also includes a carbon component, and 23% VAT. In 2026 the government applied a temporary ISP discount and adjusts it regularly – changes to it also show up in pump prices, usually together with the Monday update.
Supermarket stations and low-cost brands are usually the cheapest, while motorway service areas are the most expensive. Diesel is the most used fuel in Portugal, so differences between stations are most visible there. Close to the Spanish border it is often cheaper to fill up in Spain – the border section of GasBu compares both sides of the crossing.
Diesel is currently €0.059 per litre more expensive than Petrol 95 on average (€2.215 vs €2.155). Among chains with at least 10 stations, Petroprix is the cheapest: its median diesel price of €2.069 is €0.160 below the national median. The largest network, Galp with 649 stations, sells diesel €0.023 above the median.
