± vs the country median
Since February 2026, every filling station in the United Kingdom has to report each price change to the government’s Fuel Finder scheme within 30 minutes, and the data is published as open data. GasBu shows these official prices exactly as they are reported, including the time of the last change; if a price looks wrong, it can be reported to the government at gov.uk.
The price consists of the wholesale price of fuel, fuel duty – a fixed amount per litre – and VAT, which is charged on top of the duty. Because the duty is the same everywhere, the differences between stations come mainly from competition and from the retailer’s margin.
Motorway service areas are usually the most expensive places to fill up. Supermarket forecourts and stations in towns with several competitors nearby tend to be cheaper, while rural areas and islands are often dearer. Standard petrol in the United Kingdom has been E10 since 2021; E5 is sold as super unleaded.
Diesel is currently £0.252 per litre more expensive than Petrol 95 on average (£1.995 vs £1.743). Among chains with at least 27 stations, GO is the cheapest: its median diesel price of £1.899 is £0.100 below the national median. The largest network, Esso with 1,462 stations, sells diesel £0.010 above the median.
