± vs the country median
Italy has one of the densest station networks in Europe and every station must report its prices to the ministry's Osservaprezzi carburanti database. Since 2023, stations must also display the regional average price next to their own, so drivers can see immediately whether they are paying more than the average. Motorway stations are the most expensive; independent unbranded stations, the so-called pompe bianche, and supermarket stations are among the cheapest.
At the same station, the price often depends on how you fill up: self-service (fai da te) is cheaper, while full service (servito) with an attendant can cost noticeably more per litre.
Taxes account for about half of the price: excise duty (accisa), a fixed amount per litre, plus 22% VAT. Since 2025 the excise rates on diesel and petrol have been gradually brought closer together – diesel excise is rising and petrol excise is falling – so the traditional price advantage of diesel is shrinking.
Diesel is currently €0.219 per litre more expensive than Petrol 95 on average (€2.253 vs €2.034). Among chains with at least 30 stations, Eni is the cheapest: its median diesel price of €2.190 is €0.059 below the national median.
