± vs the country median
In France, stations must declare their prices to the official website prix-carburants.gouv.fr, so the prices of almost the entire network – around ten thousand stations – are public. Differences between departments are largely driven by the type of stations: where hypermarket stations dominate, the average is lower; in Paris and Île-de-France, in the mountains, in sparsely populated areas and on motorways it is higher. Corsica has a reduced VAT rate on fuel, yet it remains among the most expensive regions because of transport costs and limited competition.
At usual prices, more than half of what you pay is taxes: the domestic excise on energy products (TICPE, formerly TIPP), a fixed amount per litre, and 20% VAT, which is also charged on the excise. That is why pump prices react to oil prices more slowly and less than proportionally – the fixed tax does not change with the market.
Hypermarket stations (E.Leclerc, Intermarché, Carrefour, Système U, Auchan) are traditionally the cheapest; motorway service areas are the most expensive, often by tens of cents per litre. SP95-E10 is usually cheaper than SP95 and is suitable for the vast majority of petrol cars made after 2000. Superethanol E85 is the cheapest fuel of all, but only for flex-fuel vehicles or cars with an approved conversion kit.
Diesel is currently €0.169 per litre more expensive than Petrol 95 on average (€2.356 vs €2.186). Among chains with at least 29 stations, TotalEnergies is the cheapest: its median diesel price of €2.250 is €0.101 below the national median.
