In Croatia, the government sets maximum retail prices for the most common fuels – Eurosuper 95 and Eurodiesel – and currently reviews them every week, with new prices taking effect on Tuesday. Stations may sell below the cap, but most stay at or close to it, so differences between regions are small. Premium fuels (100-octane petrol, premium diesel) are not capped and their prices vary much more between networks.
The price consists of the wholesale price, the excise duty and 25% VAT. The government keeps the caps partly by adjusting the excise duty – when oil prices rise, it often lowers the excise so that the maximum price rises less.
Because prices change on Tuesday, it is worth watching the weekly announcement: if an increase is announced, it pays to fill up on Monday; if a decrease is announced, wait until Tuesday. With premium fuels, compare prices between networks, where the differences are much bigger. Near the border with Slovenia, check prices on both sides.
Diesel is currently €0.072 per litre more expensive than Petrol 95 on average (€1.873 vs €1.802).
