± vs the country median
Since 1 April 2026, stations in Germany may raise prices only once a day, at 12:00; they can lower them at any time. Our data confirms that the daily jump now comes around noon and prices then only fall, reaching their lowest point in the late afternoon and early evening. The old advice that fuel is most expensive in the morning and cheapest in the evening therefore no longer fully applies – the rhythm of the day has changed.
All stations must report their prices to the Market Transparency Unit for Fuels (MTS-K), so current prices are available for practically the whole network.
The price consists of the wholesale price, the energy tax (a fixed amount per litre), the CO2 price, which increases over time, and 19% VAT. Differences between federal states are small; differences between individual stations and times of day are much bigger.
Autobahn service stations are the most expensive; independent stations and discount chains are usually cheaper than the big brands. Super E10 tends to be a few cents cheaper than Super E5 and is approved for the vast majority of petrol cars.
Diesel is currently €0.159 per litre more expensive than Petrol 95 on average (€2.248 vs €2.089). Among chains with at least 30 stations, M1 is the cheapest: its median diesel price of €2.189 is €0.050 below the national median. The largest network, Aral with 2,171 stations, sells diesel €0.010 above the median.
