± vs the country median
Austria has a special rule: stations may raise fuel prices only once a day, at 12:00, while they can lower them at any time. Prices are therefore usually highest just after noon and fall again during the afternoon and evening; the cheapest time to fill up is usually the morning, before noon. Every station must report its prices to E-Control's official fuel price calculator.
The price consists of the wholesale price, the mineral oil tax (a fixed amount per litre), the CO2 price, which rises gradually, and 20% VAT. Fuel in Austria is often cheaper than in neighbouring Germany and Italy, so many drivers fill up just across the border.
Motorway service stations are usually the most expensive; discount stations and independent operators are among the cheapest. Differences between federal states are smaller than differences between individual stations in the same town, so it is always worth comparing stations close to you.
Diesel is currently €0.287 per litre more expensive than Petrol 95 on average (€2.171 vs €1.884). Among chains with at least 9 stations, SOCAR is the cheapest: its median diesel price of €2.126 is €0.032 below the national median. The largest network, Genol (Lagerhaus) with 380 stations, sells diesel €0.010 below the median.
