Fuel prices in Spain: what you should know

Why prices differ between provinces

Spain has a free fuel market: every station sets its own price and must report it to the official register of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, so current prices are public for more than ten thousand stations. The biggest gap is caused by taxes. The Canary Islands are outside the Spanish VAT and hydrocarbon tax area – they apply the local IGIC and their own regional fuel tax, which is why Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife are usually the cheapest provinces. Ceuta and Melilla also have their own tax regime (IPSI instead of VAT).

The Balearic Islands, on the other hand, are regularly among the most expensive regions because of shipping costs and less competition. On the mainland, the provincial average drops where automated low-cost stations and supermarket stations are common, while sparsely populated provinces and motorway service areas tend to be more expensive.

What makes up the price at the pump

Roughly half of the price is taxes: the special hydrocarbon tax, a fixed amount per litre, with 21% VAT on top. The rest is the wholesale price of the product, which follows international markets with a delay of a few days, plus logistics and the station's margin. When the government temporarily changes the hydrocarbon tax, as it did in 2026, stations do not always pass the change on in full or on the same day – comparing prices is worth it especially at those moments.

Where to fill up for less

Automated low-cost stations (Ballenoil, Petroprix, Plenoil and others), hypermarket stations and cooperative networks are usually noticeably cheaper than the big brands, often by more than ten cents per litre. Motorway service areas are traditionally the most expensive. Many stations change prices several times a week, so it pays to check the map before you set off rather than stopping at the first station you see.

What today's data shows

Diesel is currently €0.104 per litre more expensive than Petrol 95 on average (€1.888 vs €1.784). Among chains with at least 30 stations, bonÀrea is the cheapest: its median diesel price of €1.675 is €0.249 below the national median. The largest network, Repsol with 2,745 stations, sells diesel €0.045 above the median.
